Pilates

'Physical fitness can neither be achieved by wishful thinking nor outright purchase.' Joseph Pilates

The Pilates Method is a unique mind-body exercise system to strengthen the core and the back, improve posture, flexibility and muscle tone and develop overall body conditioning. Pilates is a full body workout that focuses on breath, muscle control and the overall balance of the body.

Its creator Joseph H. Pilates was a visionary who had firm ideas about how to attain a happy, healthy and balanced body and mind. He developed his series of exercises to be performed on the mat focusing on developing strong abdominal and back muscles, correcting imbalances in the body that bad, habitual daily activities caused, and to improving the condition of the body. Extending his stretching and toning mat exercises to equipment training, he also invented many unique pieces of equipment to perform a variety of moves on. Joseph Pilates began creating his method in the early 1900's and throughout his colourful life experiences strived to teach people the importance of a balanced body, mind and spirit. His published work Return to Life through Contrology and Your Health (1945), which was co-authored by William J. Miller, outlines his simple but effective ideas on the conditioning of the body and mind and its effects on daily life.

Pilates classical matwork training consists of around 34 exercises, with some variations, each one performed for a specific number of repetitions with great form and precision in tandem with correct breathing. Consistent classical Pilates matwork practise will result in a strong core and back, better alignment, better posture, stronger awareness of the body, the development of lean muscle tone and length in the body, improved breathing and overall better health.

Concentration, control, centering, precision, breath, flow (fluidity of movement) integration, intuition (body awareness) and stamina are vital components of the classical Pilates matwork.
